Self-Care Practices for Women Who Support National Service
She had not done something just for herself in eight months.
Eight months of school runs, cooking, cleaning, managing, waiting, worrying, and showing up.
Eight months of being everything for everyone.
And zero minutes of being something for herself.
Until a fellow IMMOWA member looked at her across the table and said… “When last did you do something that was just for you?”
She could not answer.
Self-care is not selfish.
This is something IMMOWA says loudly and repeatedly to its members.
Because in a culture that celebrates sacrifice and endurance, the women who give the most are often the last ones to give anything to themselves.
But here is the truth…
A depleted woman cannot sustain anyone. A burnt-out mother cannot show up fully for her children. A neglected wife cannot pour love she has not received.
You have to fill your cup too.
Self-care for immigration wives does not have to be expensive or complicated.
It can be a morning walk before the children wake up. A phone call with an IMMOWA sister who makes you laugh. A book. A bath. A quiet hour with no responsibilities. Attending your IMMOWA social event without guilt. Showing up for your health screening because your body deserves attention too.
IMMOWA is a reminder that YOU are worth caring for.
And making time for yourself is not abandoning your family. It is sustaining it.
